With a huge aging population, arthritis has become one of the major health care concerns in our country. But is there anything that can be done to avoid this debilitating condition?

With a huge aging population, arthritis has become one of the major health care concerns in our country. But is there anything that can be done to avoid this debilitating condition?


Start from childhood : Prevention of arthritis begins from childhood. Children should eat calcium rich foods, preferably non-processed foods, like dairy and dairy products, green leafy vegetables, ragi/ nachni, broccoli, and fish. Obesity has now become a major concern in childhood and should not be allowed in children.


Exercise smartly : Weight training should match the level of your daily activity. Not everyone has to lift 100 pounds rice sacks in their daily routine !


Keep them supple : Doing stretching exercises, eg. like yoga, the right way cause less injury to your joints and keeps them supple.


Maintain adequate hydration : All joints need lubrication, and maintaining adequate hydration will help, avoid your muscles getting fatigued.


Family history : If there is a history of familial arthritis, get a medical checkup to ascertain whether you, have the same, so that proper treatment can be initiated at the earliest.

 

In the end, arthritis is a part of the aging process and the treatment depends on individual perception.
